Young Bahamians proudly represent The Bahamas at Sunfish World Championship 2024

It was a changing of the guard this year, as The Bahamas sent its youngest ever team to the Sunfish World Championship in Texas, following on from last year’s oldest ever team.

The team of Alvington McKenzie, Tanaj Manos and Dai Major (all from Exuma) alongside brothers Dawson Knowles and Drake Knowles (from Long Island) proudly represented The Bahamas, all with top 50 finishes during the competition. It was the tallest and youngest that led the contingent with 18-year old Alvington McKenzie as best finishing Bahamian after 12 races, finishing 39th overall out of 100 competitors. 13-year old Drake Knowles was 51st overall and the 6th best placing youth sailor (not turning 19 in 2024); Drake also won the prize for youngest competitor at the event.

17-year old Tanaj Manos was 65th overall and 7th best youth sailor and 19-year old Dawson Knowles, in his first ever appearance in the United States finished 75th overall. Completing the team, 16-year old Dai Major finished 80th overall and 10th placed youth sailor.

Coach Dallas Knowles commented: “It is probably the most difficult sailing conditions any of the team have faced before. I’m impressed with their performance but also incredibly proud of the how they have conducted themselves at this event and the respect they have earned from everyone competing at this event. They have made The Bahamas proud.”
