Cecil G. Cooke Memorial Junior Regatta 2024

Sponsored by Subway, the Cecil Cooke Memorial Youth Regatta threw up some wild and wooly conditions.

18-22 knots in Montagu Bay was a blast for the advanced sailors in the Optimist and ILCA Fleets. This was especially so as Race Committee was kind enough to set the 4 races with reaches. Racing only on Saturday due to conditions of 25-35 on Sunday, these fleets of advanced sailors were small. Some sailors having decided conditions were beyond their ability and exercising their rights under RRS3; others unfortunately experiencing equipment breakages before the first race.

Racing was attempted for the Optimist Green and Sunfish fleets on the flat waters of the harbour off the NYC. These relatively inexperienced sailors all made a valiant attempt to sail with some handling the conditions quite well. Unfortunately some of these sailors also experienced equipment failure and with the extremely adverse current pulling the fleet towards the commercial area of Potters Cay it was determined that the conditions were not safe. Races were abandoned
